New Delhi: Starting from January 1, country's national carrier Air India will serve only vegetarian hot meals on its domestic flights in economy class with a flying time of 60 to 90 minutes.
A circular marked as 'must read', dated December 23, reads: It has been decided to provide only Indian vegetarian hot meals in economy class on domestic sector flights with duration between 61 and 90 minutes, from January 1, 2016."
The circular was issued from the office of the executive director, customer services, and is marked to all cabin crew and in-flight service personnel.
The logic behind only serving meal is that a flight clocking between 6o to 90 minutes provides the crew a window of 30 to 40 minutes to serve passengers and the time available for service does not permit the crew to offer passengers the option of choosing a meal.
The national carrier has also decided that tea and coffee would be off the menu on flights that fly during lunch and dinner time.
Air India has five categories of flights on the domestic sectors -- breakfast from 5.30 am to 9.30 am; high tea from 9.30 am to 11.30 am and 3 pm to 6.30 pm; lunch from noon to 2.30 pm; supper from 6.30 pm to 10.30 pm; and dinner from 11 pm onwards.
