A look at Steve Jobs' home in Palo Alto

New Delhi, Dec 26: The home of the late Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs in Palo Alto, California, is among the most popular stops on a sightseeing circuit of Silicon Valley. A lot of people still flock the 1930s brick-and-slate country cottage that looks as if it were plucked from an English village in the Cotswolds. It's a pilgrimage that thousands have made, some from as far away as Slovakia and Singapore.The cottage is set in a serene environment and has its own unique style. The 5,768-sq ft modest house sits on over a half acre and includes 7 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms. A cursory glance at Jobs' residence can easily make someone think about how unpretentiously he lived: no live-in help, no security guards, and no drivers. He even kept the back door unlocked during the day and one passing through the street can easily see Jobs sitting in front of an iMac. On Halloween, he usually dresses up as Frankenstein and hand out Odwalla bars masquerading as treats.The late tech mogul bought the Palo Alto home in the mid-1990s, after his marriage with Laurene. The house is very much of the “British country style,” fitting beautifully with the rest of this quiet neighborhood. After all, simplicity and beauty were the two trademark qualities that Steve brought to all the personal technology he designed.After Jobs succumbed to a long battle with pancreatic cancer on October 5, 2011, hundreds gathered in iPhone-lit vigils outside his home. They paid their respects and expressed their sorrow in chalk and crayon. They lined the low split-rail fence with apples with one bite taken out of them. He was often spotted having a bowl of steel-cut oatmeal and fresh blueberries at the yogurt shop Fraiche or dining at former Google chef Charlie Ayers' Calafia Cafe.One of his favorite places to chat up with the customers was an Apple store two miles from his home.According to Walter Isaacson, a former managing editor of Time magazine, who also wrote the 630-page biography of Steve Jobs, says Jobs's second act at Apple, which began in 1996, was arguably the most creative time of his life, a period during which he revamped the Macintosh computer line and gave the world the iPod, iTunes, the iPhone and the iPad.Isaacson attributes Jobs's occasionally callous and even ruthless treatment of friends and colleagues to his drive for perfectionism, a quest reflected in the clean and elegant lines of Apple products.
