New Delhi: After its much awaited launch of iPhone 6S and 6S Plus in India in October, Apple today launched its smartwatch series Apple Watch ahead of Diwali season.

Apple Watch will now be available for sale through the company's retail channels at a price of Rs 30,900. The launch comes in India, seven months after it was made available in several countries.

Though Apple enthusiasts in the country will finally be able to buy the smartwatch in India, reports suggest the Cupertino-based firm is already looking at introducing the second edition of the wearable device by middle of next year.

It allows users to make and receive calls, read e-mails, control music, manage Instagram photos and keep track of fitness using the smartwatch.

Apple Watch is the first new product category to be launched under the company CEO Tim Cook, who took over the reins of the company after the founder and the then CEO Steve Jobs stepped down following bad health.

This is also the first new device category since 2010, when Apple entered the tablet market with its iPad.

5 things to know about Apple Watch:

1) The product comes to India pre-loaded with watch OS 2 and consists of 1,300 native apps. A total of 13,000 apps are available on the Watch App Store currently.

2) The smartwatch is available in gold, Rose Gold, Space Gray, silver anodized aluminium variants. The watch is also available in polished silver or Space Black stainless steel, and 18-Carat Rose Gold or Yellow Gold models.

3) The starting price of the Silver Aluminium Case and White Sport Band is Rs 30,900 for the 38mm and Rs 34,900 for the 42mm, making these two the cheapest of the lot. It is Rs 48,900 and Rs 52,900 for the 38mm and 42mm Stainless Steel Case respectively, with White Sport Band.

4) Recently, Apple had partnered luxury brand Hermfor a new edition priced $1,100 (about ₹71,300) onwards.

5) Apple Watch delivers up to 18-hour battery life and has digital face that can look like a traditional time piece.
