In an attempt to honour New Zealand aviator Jean Batten, the first woman to make a solo flight across the south Atlantic in 1935, Google today dedicated a doodle to mark the pioneer’s 107th birthday.

In the 1930s, when two of her attempts to fly from England to Australia failed, Batten decided not to give up and made a record-breaking journey in 1934.

The feat made her the first woman to make a solo flight across the south Atlantic in 1935. Batten flew from England to New Zealand with her black cat, Buddy.

When the wheels of her airplane touched down in New Zealand, Jean Batten claimed that it was the greatest moment of her life. Despite facing many failures in her life, she followed her dreams, and conveyed a very strong message of never giving up no matter what the odds.

Batten was awarded the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale medal in 1938, aviation's highest honour. She also became the first woman to receive the medal.

Google, on its blog, sent out a message to everyone at the end of the post, “Today we celebrate what would have been this pioneering pilot’s 107th birthday with a reminder to fly fiercely towards our boldest dreams.”
