Bengaluru: A rapid increase in the number of Indians opting for smartphones and a rise in the number of mobile internet users has catapulted India as the world’s fourth largest mobile app economy. As the rise continues, so does the amount of time Indians spend on applications, mobile-app analytics company App Annie has said in a report.
India only comes behind countries like China, US and Brazil in terms of total app downloads per year. As per estimates for India, this figure is projected to grow by 92 per cent to reach 7.7 billion downloads this year, and further to 20.1 billion by 2020.
“With the introduction of affordable smartphones and better infrastructure supporting mobile , and given India's population, the growth here is expected to be significant,” Junde Yu, Managing Director of App Annie told the Times of India.
As compared to the statistics of 2014, the time spent by Indians on various e-commerce applications has gone up by 11.5 times whereas the time spent on video streaming apps has risen by 7.4 percent.
“People have this perception in India that users spend more time on browsers. That is not true. Our data shows that the percentage of time spent on apps in India is the same as around the world, at 93% (the remaining 7% comes from mobile browsers),” Yu told.
