Facebook and its Messenger app will stop working on a number of smartphones by the end of this month.

According to a report in The Independent, Facebook has that  it will end support for devices running some older versions of the apps, including v55 of the Facebook app and v10 of Messenger on Android.

The social media giant has also announced that it was stopping support for Facebook for Windows Phone.

Facebook has advised its users to update to the latest version of its app or migrate to Facebook Lite, if they are not able to run the app installed on their devices.

The company has said that if a person’s device does not support the latest versions of Facebook, he should go to Facebook.com through his mobile browser

Facebook has defended its decision to end support for older versions by pointing out that it always tries to introduce rich features for its users.

“Our team spends countless hours making it the best way to message your friends and family,” Facebook said in a blog.

“One of the ways we continue to improve is by consistently introducing rich features, like voice and video calling, games, and bots for Messenger. Using older versions of apps means that experiences won’t work well or sometimes not at all,” it added.
