New Delhi: Setting off a shining example to be emulated by all the other airports across the globe, the one in the Cochin has hit a major milestone by becoming the worlds’ first airport to be run on 100 per cent solar energy.
Authorities have spent around Rs 62 crore for the installation of solar power plant in the process of accomplishing this feat, following which the airport will no longer be paying any electricity charges.
As per their own calculations, the investment cost will be recovered in about six years from now.
This idea of flying through sunshine came to the managers because of the concern of the rising electricity bills which they wanted to eliminate.
Already getting inspired by Cochin, several other airports have initiated the process of moving in this direction. Staff of the Liberia airport have visited and had a meeting with the authorities of the first solar powered airport.
Besides, George airport in South Africa and Kolkata airport are also planning to make themselves independent of the electric bills.
The importance accorded to alternate sources of energy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, particularly from the sun, has begun to be taken seriously and the Cochin airport is a glaring example.
