ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey says its military has again shelled positions of U.S.-backed Kurdish fighters across the border in Syria, east of the Euphrates River.

The state-run Anadolu news agency says four Kurdish fighters were killed and six were wounded in the attack on Wednesday. It says Turkish artillery units targeted Kurdish militiamen in Syria's Kobani region, a stronghold of the Kurdish fighters.

It was the second time Turkey's army has shelled militia positions east of the Euphrates. The attack came a day after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Ankara has finalized plans for a "comprehensive and effective" operation to drive the Kurdish militia from the region.

Ankara considers the militia a terror threat and an extension of Kurdish rebels waging an insurgency within Turkey.
