MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The country's first major-party transgender candidate for governor says she has no idea what she will do next after losing the election in Vermont, but Christine Hallquist says she's keeping all of her options open.

Hallquist, a former utility executive, was a relative unknown at the start her campaign. The Democrat gained 40 percent of the votes in Tuesday's election against incumbent Republican Phil Scott, who took 55 percent.

The Human Rights Campaign said in the written statement after the election that Hallquist led a trailblazing, historic campaign.

It said she ran on a platform of furthering civil rights, expanding health care and holding government accountable.
