DILI, East Timor (AP) — Scores of people have demonstrated in East Timor's capital to protest the killing of three people at a party, allegedly by a drunken policeman.
East Timor police chief Julio da Costa Hornay said Monday a suspect, officer Jose Mina, has been apprehended. He said the motive was not known for the shooting at the party hosted by Mina's police colleague in Dili.
Witnesses said a sudden electrical blackout occurred just after midnight Saturday, and they saw Mina standing on a bench in the dark and shooting randomly. Three men died instantly and five other injured guests were hospitalized.
The killing sparked protests throughout the city on Monday, with demonstrators shouting "Police are murderers" and demanding justice.
