MOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) — A candidate running against a Kentucky county clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples is fending off attacks. Not from the clerk, but from his former rival in the primary.
Elwood Caudill Jr. won the Democratic nomination in May to face Republican Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis in the November election. Caudill defeated David Ermold, a gay man who was denied a marriage license by Davis in 2015.
Ermold has posted on Facebook that Caudill is a bigot who uses anti-gay slurs. Ermold has not witnessed this, but has posted messages from others who say they have.
Caudill has responded by calling Ermold a bully who is spreading lies.
The election is Nov. 6.
