STRASBOURG, France (AP) — The European Court of Human Rights has dismissed a challenge by soccer player Adrian Mutu and speedskater Claudia Pechstein claiming they were denied a fair trial by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

However, the panel of seven European judges says Pechstein's rights were violated because Switzerland-based CAS denied a public hearing in her appeal against a doping ban. The court says Switzerland must pay Pechstein damages of 8,000 euros ($9,200).

The decision, published Tuesday after an eight-year process, could force CAS to ease its traditional secrecy.

Currently, CAS allows public hearings only in the rare event that all parties agree. CAS says it will examine if the France-based European court is requesting "a public hearing at the request of one party only."
