STOCKHOLM (AP) — Sweden's public broadcaster says a Congolese colonel has been arrested during an inquiry into the March 2017 killing of two U.N. experts in Kananga.

Broadcaster SVT says a recording introduced on Thursday revealed a meeting that Col. Jean de Dieu Mambweni had with American Michael Sharp and Swedish national Zaida Catalan two days before their deaths. He had never acknowledged it.

SVT said the recording indicated that Mambweni was in contact with an unnamed person who lured the experts to the place where they were killed.

Mambweni was arrested later Thursday.

Congo has blamed the killings on the Kamwina Nsapu militia active in the central Kasai provinces. However, rights groups have said security forces may have been involved, which the government denies.

The experts had been investigating alleged rights abuses.
