Editors:
Based on conversations with some members who have teams playing in early season college basketball tournaments, we are changing the way we cover nearly two dozen tournaments, the first starting later this week. A list of the events is below.
Instead of moving stories on each individual game, in most cases we will provide a story each day from each tournament that rounds up the action from all the games, with quotes, details and context of how the games affect one another. Each tournament story will also have a companion Latest, which will include short recaps from each game plus any short newsworthy items.
Our goal is to adjust our coverage more closely to how many fans follow these unique tournaments, as clusters of games that are related.
Here are the tournaments that will see this change in coverage and get a roundup and companion Latest:
— Gildan Charleston Classic
— 2K Empire Classic
— U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam
— Air Force Reserve Tip-Off
— Maui Invitational
— Hall Of Fame Classic
— MGM Resorts Main Event
— Battle 4 Atlantis
— NIT Season Tip-Off
— AdvoCare Invitational
— Wooden Legacy
— Las Vegas Holiday Invitational
— Las Vegas Invitational
— Emerald Coast Classic
— Diamond Head Classic
The following tournaments will get a Latest only but no roundup or individual gamers: Myrtle Beach Invitational, Legends Classic, Cancun Challenge, Cayman Islands Classic, Fort Myers Tip-Off and Las Vegas Classic.
Other tournaments/events that are not listed here will not see changes in coverage. Additionally, these roundups will only cover each tournament's main bracket, not any offshoot games or brackets involving smaller teams that do not feed into a tournament's primary field.
If you have any questions about these changes, please reach out to deputy sports editor Oskar Garcia at ogarcia@ap.org or 215-446-6632 or director of sports products Barry Bedlan at bbedlan@ap.org.
Thanks,
Oskar
