Contact lenses are a welcome resort when you don’t wish to wear spectacles. This invention was heartily received by a number of spectacle wearers .But no one knew that this tiny little thing can prove fatal to someone to such an extent. Recently, a case surfaced about a woman who had 27 contact lenses dug in her eye and she had no idea where they were. It was only when the surgeons along with specialist trainee ophthalmologist Rupal Morjaria at Solihull Hospital discovered the lens.
Ms. Morjaria reveals that blueish mass of 17 lenses were found in the eye of the patient, who was admitted for a cataract operation. In the second inspection, a startling number of 10 lenses were recovered.
Ms. Morjaria said in Optometry Today, ““None of us have ever seen this before,” she said. “It was such a large mass. All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together. We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there."
As soon as the lenses were recovered, the cataract surgery was postponed, as it increased the risk of endophthalmitis, which causes serious inflammation of the eye.
She added, ““Because she had harboured these contact lenses in her eye for an unknown length of time, if we had operated she would have had a lot of bacteria around her conjunctiva."
The woman has been wearing contact lenses for the past 35 years but never visited optometrists for regular check up. She never complained about anything stuck in her eyes. After she found that her eye has been harbouring 27 contact lenses, she was just as shocked as the doctors were. Two weeks after her lenses were retracted, she felt much comfortable. She thought that the discomfort she’s being feeling is just a part of old age.
This lays emphasis on how important it is to visit your optician often for regular check ups. Care should be taken while wearing contact lenses. Such kind of happenings can prove fatal to your vision. You could lose eyesight or catch severe infection. Even when the woman was feeling the discomfort, she chose to sit back and relax. This is a lesson that we should immediately contact our ophthalmologist in case we feel any discomfort in our eyes. No discomfort is too small to be ignore.
