New Delhi: National award winning actress Shweta Basu, who was arrested for prostitution in Hyderabad, has reportedly told the police that she turned to the flesh trade because no films were coming her way and she had run out of money.
The actress was caught red-handed, when the Hyderabad Police raided a famous hotel at Banjara Hills, according to reports.
Shweta shot to fame in 2002 when she won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist for her role in the film ‘Makdee'. After which she featured in several TV serials and also worked in a few Bollywood films. Later she took forward her acting career to Telugu films.
Shweta who took to the sex trade as she was running out of money was helped by a man named Balu. Balu is an assistant director in Tollywood and acted as agent to the actress. Apparently he collected Rs.1 lakh each from high flying customers.
As quoted by a leading website Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police N Koti Reddy said during questioning the actress revealed that she got into prostitution as she was not getting film offers any longer, and was financially in dire straits. “The actress is a victim; she has not been arrested. She has been sent to a rescue home, while Balu was arrested under Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act,” said Reddy.
Since the actress is taken as a victim, she has been sent to rescue home run by a women and child welfare department where women rescued by police and those facing trial are given shelter during the trial period.
Before going to the rescue home Shweta underwent a medical examination at a government hospital. As per the reports Shweta will be kept in the rescue home for three months.
