New Delhi: ‘Udta Punjab’ has been creating a buzz all around. After making it to the headlines because of a legal battle between the makers and the Censor Board; the film was leaked online two days before release.
Starring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh; ‘Udta Punjab’ deals with substance abuse in Northen part of the state and its effects on the youth.
While the CBFC giving certification to the movie turned out to be a triumph for the entire team, the leaked censor copy of ‘Udta Punjab’ has again increased their worries.
Indeed, this was a big blow for the makers and the entire team is quite upset and has urged the audience not to go for the leaked copy.
However, this is not the first time a movie was leaked before its release. Here are other times a movie was leaked before its release:
Manjhi – The Mountain Man
Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte, the movie was based on the life of Dashrath Manjhi, who had carved a path 30 ft wide and 360 ft long through a hill using only a hammer and chisel. The movie was leaked 10 days before release.
Tera Kya Hoga Johnny
Starring Neil Nitin Mukesh, Kay Kay Menon and Soha Ali Khan, the movie was the sequel of ‘Johnny Gaddar’. ‘Tera Kya Hoga Johnny’ also starred two filmmakers, Anurag Kashyap and Aditya Bhattacharya. The movie had gone through a pretty rough phase before it hit the theatres. ‘Tera Kya Hoga Johnny’ was supposed to release in 2008 but was delayed; it was then set for an early 2010 release. However, several parts of the movie were leaked online. Director Sudhir Mishara even filed an FIR about it. Later the movie was released on 31 December 2010.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan
Salman Khan’s much popular movie of 2015 ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ too reportedly couldn’t escape this jinx and was leaked online. However, not much was reported about it. In fact, the leak of the movie didn’t affect the box-office collections of the movie and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ went on to become a blockbuster hit.
Paa
Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan, ‘Paa’ was a comedy-drama film directed by R. Balki. The film was based on a rare genetic condition known as progeria and placed emphasis on a father-son relationship. Interestingly, Big B and Abhishek,who are father and son in the real life, inversed their roles in the movie. Unfortunately, the movie, which was release in December 2009, was leaked online on the day of its release.
Mohalla Assi
This Sunny Deol Starrer was leaked online even before its release. The film was stuck in the courts for a long time for the use of abusive language. Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and produced by Vinay Tiwari the film featured Sakshi Tanwar and Ravi Kishan in important roles. ‘Mohalla Assi’ was a satire on the commercialisation of pilgrimage city of Varanasi and the fake gurus who lure the foreign tourists.
Paanch
‘Paanch’ is an unreleased Anurag Kashyap movie which was loosely based on the 1976-77 Joshi-Abhyankar serial murders. The movie featured Kay Kay Menon, Aditya Srivastava, Vijay Maurya and Tejaswini Kolhapure. The movie was never released as the CBFC raised issues regarding the violence displayed in it. However the film got leaked online. Anurag Kashyap did not bother to fight against it as it was stuck in the censors for a long time.
