This is the curtain raiser of the world's largest ‘legal red light area'. It had been made legal since October 2000 after unsuccessful attempts by the governments to completely extradite prostitutes of the district.
In fact, sex workers of this area also are tax payers because prostitution here is acknowledged as a profession.
De Wallen is the largest and best known red-light district in Amsterdam and consists of a network of alleys containing approximately three hundred one-room cabins rented by prostitutes who offer their sexual services from behind a window or glass door.
