New Delhi: Dhananjoy Chatterjee is a name that echoed in the walls of judicial system of India for 14 long years. His death sentence became one of the most controversial capital punishments ever given in the history of Indian judiciary.

Dhananjoy is the last murder-rapist in India to be hanged till death. Although many petitions were filed by his family to grant him pardon but the criminal could not escape the hangman's noose.

On March 15, 1999, Hetal Parekh, a 14 year old Gujarati girl in south Kolkata was retuning home from school. She did not know what was awaiting her. Hetal's parents, who were out of home, had left the keys with their apartment guard, Dhananjoy. When Hetal collected the keys from Dhananjoy and started walking towards her house, Dhananjoy followed her.

Dhananjoy entered Hatel's apartment. He not only raped her but also brutally choked her to death. He went absconding after the murder. A manhunt was soon launched by police.

A resident of Bankura district of West Bengal, Dhananjoy took shelter in his house and kept shuttling between his house and his father-in-law's house in  order to evade the police.
