New Delhi: Looking to play classic console video games like Donkey Kong, Mario Bros., Asteroids, Dig Dug, and Pac Man, for free? Now you can as the Internet Archive is now offering loads of classic games for free.
To give its users a treat, Archive has posted a smorgasbord of browser-based games for five consoles released in the 1970s and 1980s: The Atari 2600, the Atari 7800 ProSystem, the ColecoVision, the Magnavox Odyssey, and the Astrocade.
The games, released as the Internet Archive Console Living Room, are also available for free downloads. They don't have sound yet, but the archive promises to get that up and running soon.
The archive promises to expand it "in the coming months." Since the archive comes with versions of each game in an browser-based emulator, you can jump right in to the game of your choice without the need of downloading any specialized software.
The Internet Archive's project looks to preserve a widely-unavailable software phenomenon, as the consoles and cartridges needed to play these games have largely disappeared. It notes that home consoles have more or less destroyed the popularity of arcades.
